“Getting Students to Think” Using Problem-Based
Learning in the Classroom
Southwestern Community College and the Western Regional Center
for Excellence in Teaching cordially invite you and your colleagues
to attend a professional development event exploring problem-based
learning. This unique learning approach challenges students
to "learn
to learn," working cooperatively in groups to seek solutions to
real world problems. Various strategies are used to engage students'
curiosity and initiate learning the subject matter. Problem based
learning prepares students to think critically and analytically,
and to find and use appropriate learning resources. This April
10, 2008 event features a presentation
by Dr. George Watson of the University of Delaware. Dr. Watson
will introduce problem-based learning through a sample problem,
present strategies for effectively using it, and end the session
with preparation of a problem scenario that you can use in your
classroom.
